The influence of Japanese art on the West is a significant aspect of art history, particularly during the mid-19th and 20th centuries. The term "Japonisme" was coined by French art critic Philippe Burty in 1872 to describe the widespread dissemination and incorporation of Japanese art, culture, and study in the West. This period saw a surge in the collection of Japanese art, especially ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which were immediately noticed for their distinct aesthetic and unconventional compositions.
